This new health education building achieves an exceptional level of energy performance both with regard to embodied energy of the building superstructure, on-going energy consumption and air tightness. As a practice, we believe in 'insulation, insulation insulation!' and the external walls and roof are constructed from prefabricated timber SIPS panels keeping heat loss to an absolute minimum. What heating energy is required is obtained via an air-source heat pump.
To further minimise the building's carbon footprint, the building is clad in locally sourced sweet chestnut planks with high performance aluminium/timber hybrid windows. The new wing sweeps around a new courtyard and the monot-pitch section is oriented to closely control north light into the corridor and consulting rooms whilst minimising glare and heat gain from the south.
